To expand its market in Indonesia, Research in Motion (RIM) launched low-end alias cheap BlackBerry to Indonesia.
RIM in the near future will soon be launching Curve 9220, cheap and smart phones sold at a price U.S. $ 210 or about IDR 1.9 million.
RIM argued that by launching this cheap BlackBerry, a company based in Waterloo Canada, wanted to make the BlackBerry Curve9220 as the first smart phone for feature phone users.
"We want to help people who want to move from feature phones to smart phones. We believe we can succeed in this way," said RIM's global sales chief, Patrick Spence was quoted as saying by Reuters on Thursday, April 19, 2012.
BlackBerry 9220 relies on special keys of the BlackBerry Messenger, FM radio, 2-megapixel camera, and just running with 2G network.
Several analysts assessed RIM has made the right move. Adam Leach, principal analyst at research firm Ovum, said this is where the strength of RIM, which is able to offer a less expensive smart phone with a better experience when compared to the same class of Android phones.
"Their success in Indonesia showed BlackBerry has other attributes, and global capabilities that are attractive to the market, which is different compared with just high-end markets such as in Northern America and Western Europe," said Leach.
